Medium Rigid (MR)

VicRoads Licence only or Nationally Recognised Training qualification

Develop the skills to safely drive medium rigid vehicles and become eligible for your VicRoads Medium Rigid heavy vehicle licence, with the option to complete the nationally recognised qualification TLILIC2015 – Licence to drive a medium rigid vehicle.

Transform your employment prospects with our Medium Rigid (MR) VicRoads Licence program, designed for Victorian drivers ready to step up to larger commercial vehicles, medium rigid trucks and high-capacity delivery vehicles, with confidence and professionalism.

Across a focused blend of theory and practical driving, you’ll build the capabilities employers expect: advanced control of complex vehicle functions, professional roadcraft and hazard management, real-time monitoring of traffic and road conditions, and effective vehicle performance management in demanding environments. Our coaching emphasises real-world application so you finish work-ready, not just test-ready.

Training is delivered at our Tullamarine Training Centre and combines targeted pre-reading with hands-on instruction in an MR vehicle. You’ll complete written and practical assessments through the official VicRoads licence testing process. On successful assessment, you’ll receive a Certificate of Competency to upgrade to your Medium Rigid licence.

For participants seeking a nationally recognised outcome, you also have the option to complete the qualification TLILIC2015 – Licence to drive a medium rigid vehicle. This qualification is part of the Transport and Logistics Training Package and is recognised across Australia. It confirms that you have achieved the national competency standards to safely and professionally operate medium rigid vehicles in commercial transport settings. Choosing this option not only meets VicRoads licensing requirements but also strengthens your professional credentials and employment prospects in industries that require verified heavy vehicle driving qualifications.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold an Australian car licence for the minimum requirement of 12 months (not including cancellations or suspensions) to be eligible or hold an approved VicRoads exemption to upgrade to Medium Rigid Licence.

I had training for my HR license, and Alex was my trainer. He was very helpful and did an excellent job explaining the rules and providing clear guidance on road safety. His training made it much easier to understand what’s required to obtain the HR license. I would definitely recommend Alex to others as well.

What is the Medium Rigid (MR) licence course?

This comprehensive 1-day course prepares you to safely operate medium rigid vehicles and qualify for your official VicRoads Medium Rigid (MR) heavy vehicle licence. You’ll learn advanced control of complex vehicle functions, professional hazard management, and rigorous safety standards through theory and hands-on practical training.

With an MR licence, you can drive any 2-axle rigid vehicle greater than 8 tonnes GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass). This includes medium trucks, larger delivery vehicles, and other medium rigid commercial vehicles.

LR (Light Rigid) covers vehicles over 4.5t up to 8t GVM or buses with more than 12 seats. MR (Medium Rigid) covers any 2-axle rigid vehicle greater than 8 tonnes GVM, allowing you to drive larger commercial trucks.

You’ll master advanced control of complex vehicle functions, commercial traffic and road condition monitoring, vehicle performance management in demanding environments, professional hazard management and defensive driving techniques, efficient driving techniques, engine power management, vehicle controls and instruments, pre-operational checks, load restraint, and rigorous safety standards for medium rigid vehicles.

Both courses provide the same training and result in your VicRoads MR licence. The nationally recognised training option (TLILIC2015) also issues a Statement of Attainment, which is recognised across Australia and can contribute toward Certificate qualifications in transport and logistics. Choose the nationally recognised option if you want credentials that count toward further qualifications or demonstrate your skills nationally.

For those seeking a nationally recognised outcome, you also have the option to complete the qualification TLILIC2015 – Licence to drive a medium rigid vehicle. This qualification is part of the Transport and Logistics Training Package and is recognised across Australia. The licence-only option provides your VicRoads licence without the additional Statement of Attainment.
Yes, the MR licence allows you to progress to Heavy Rigid (HR) and Heavy Combination (HC) licences as you advance your commercial driving career.
This qualification opens opportunities in medium truck driving, delivery and logistics, commercial transport, construction and trades requiring medium rigid vehicles, and other professional driving roles that require operation of vehicles over 8 tonnes GVM.

Your VicRoads Medium Rigid licence remains valid as long as you maintain your Victorian Driver’s Licence and meet VicRoads medical and licensing requirements. You’ll need to renew it according to your standard driver’s licence renewal cycle.

Yes. Contact us before enrolling so we can discuss reasonable adjustments while still meeting VicRoads licensing and safety standards.
