Heavy Combination (HC) - Auto

VicRoads Licence only or Nationally Recognised Training Qualification
Develop the skills to safely drive heavy combination vehicles, including coupling and uncoupling trailers, and become eligible for your VicRoads Heavy Combination licence. You can choose between a VicRoads licence-only course or the nationally recognised training option TLILIC3017 – Licence to drive a heavy combination vehicle, which includes a Statement of Attainment on successful completion.
Transform your employment prospects with our Heavy Combination (HC) VicRoads Licence program, designed for Victorian drivers ready to take the next step into Australia’s heavy freight industry. Gain the skills and confidence to operate prime movers, semi-trailers, B-doubles and other articulated vehicles safely and professionally across urban and interstate transport networks.

Across a focused blend of theory and practical driving, you’ll develop the high-level capabilities employers expect: advanced control of articulated vehicle systems, proactive monitoring of traffic and road conditions, confident coupling and uncoupling of trailers, and disciplined safety practices for demanding freight and logistics environments. Our coaching emphasises real-world application so you finish work-ready, not just test-ready.

Training is delivered at our Tullamarine Training Centre and combines targeted pre-reading and a short workbook with hands-on instruction in an automatic heavy combination vehicle. You’ll complete written and practical assessments through the official VicRoads licence testing process. On successful assessment, you’ll receive a Certificate of Competency to upgrade to your Heavy Combination licence.

For participants seeking a nationally recognised outcome, you also have the option to complete the qualification TLILIC3017 – Licence to drive a heavy combination vehicle. This qualification is part of the Transport and Logistics Training Package and is recognised across Australia. It confirms that you have achieved the nationally endorsed competency standards to safely and professionally operate heavy combination vehicles in commercial and interstate transport settings. Choosing this option not only meets VicRoads licensing requirements but also enhances your employability and industry recognition across the logistics and freight sectors.

I had training for my HR license, and Alex was my trainer. He was very helpful and did an excellent job explaining the rules and providing clear guidance on road safety. His training made it much easier to understand what’s required to obtain the HR license. I would definitely recommend Alex to others as well.

Multi-combination Driver Training TLILIC3018

What is the Heavy Combination (HC) licence course?

This comprehensive 1-day course prepares you to safely operate heavy combination vehicles including prime movers with semi-trailers and articulated vehicles, qualifying you for your official VicRoads Heavy Combination (HC) licence. You’ll learn complex articulated vehicle control, advanced hazard management, and exacting safety standards through theory and hands-on practical training.

With an HC licence, you can drive prime movers attached to a single semi-trailer with a GVM more than 9 tonnes. This includes articulated heavy combination vehicles, B-doubles, and other heavy freight vehicles on interstate networks.

HR (Heavy Rigid) covers rigid vehicles 8 tonnes GVM and above with three or more axles. HC (Heavy Combination) covers articulated vehicles – prime movers with semi-trailers over 9 tonnes GVM – allowing you to operate the full range of heavy freight vehicles including B-doubles.

You’ll master complex articulated vehicle control systems, expert traffic and road condition monitoring, vehicle performance in challenging freight environments, advanced hazard management for heavy combinations, exacting safety standards for articulated operations, efficient driving techniques, engine power management, and coupling and uncoupling trailers.

Licence-only: You receive your VicRoads Heavy Combination driver licence, which is state-issued and allows you to legally drive HC vehicles on the road.

Nationally recognised training (TLILIC3017): You receive both your VicRoads HC licence AND a Statement of Attainment for TLILIC3017. This is part of the Australian Qualifications Framework and is portable across Australia for employment and further study pathways.

Both options provide the same VicRoads licence – the nationally recognised option (additional $100) simply adds the nationally recognised qualification.
Victorian driver licences are recognised nationally for driving. If you relocate interstate, you’ll generally need to transfer your licence to the new state within their specified timeframe. If you obtained the nationally recognised training, your Statement of Attainment (TLILIC3017) remains nationally recognised for training and employment pathways.

Yes, the HC licence is a prerequisite for obtaining a Multi-Combination (MC) licence, which allows you to operate road trains and multiple trailer combinations.

This qualification enables you to work in interstate freight operations, long-haul transport, construction and logistics industries, B-double operations, and professional trucking across Australia’s freight networks.

Your VicRoads Heavy Combination licence remains valid as long as you maintain your Victorian Driver’s Licence and meet VicRoads medical and licensing requirements. You’ll need to renew it according to your standard driver’s licence renewal cycle.
  • 18 years or older
  • Hold a current valid Australian car driver’s licence for at least 24 months
  • Hold a Medium Rigid (MR) or Heavy Rigid (HR) licence for at least 12 months

This course is ideal for professional truck drivers advancing their careers, interstate freight operators, long-haul transport professionals, heavy vehicle specialists, and anyone meeting VicRoads eligibility requirements who wants their HC licence.

You must have held an MR or HR licence for at least 12 months, which means you’ll already have commercial driving experience. Additional heavy combination vehicle experience is beneficial but not mandatory for this course.

You must meet VicRoads medical standards for holding a heavy vehicle licence. If you have any medical conditions that may affect your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle, you may need to provide medical clearance. Contact VicRoads or speak with us before enrolling if you have concerns.

Only if you choose the nationally recognised training option. A USI is required to issue your Statement of Attainment (TLILIC3017) and allows you to access your accredited training records for life. It’s not required for the VicRoads licence-only option. Create or retrieve your USI at usi.gov.au.

Yes. Contact us before enrolling so we can discuss reasonable adjustments while still meeting VicRoads licensing and safety standards.
