Light Rigid (LR)

VicRoads Licence only or Nationally Recognised Training Qualification

Develop the skills to safely drive light rigid vehicles and become eligible for your VicRoads Light Rigid licence, with the option to receive the nationally recognised qualification TLILIC2014 – Licence to drive a light rigid vehicle

Transform your employment prospects with our Light Rigid (LR) VicRoads Licence program, designed for Victorian drivers ready to step into commercial vehicles, delivery trucks, small buses and service rigs, with confidence and professionalism.

Across an intensive one-day format, you’ll build the skills employers expect: advanced vehicle control and monitoring, professional roadcraft and hazard management, compliance with commercial driving safety standards, and confident decision-making in mixed traffic and changing road conditions. Our coaching focuses on real-world application so you finish ready for work, not just ready for a test.

Training is delivered at our Tullamarine Training Centre and blends targeted pre-reading with hands-on practical driving. You’ll complete written and practical assessments through the official VicRoads licence testing process. On successful assessment, you’ll receive a Certificate of Competency to upgrade to your Light Rigid licence.

For those seeking a nationally recognised outcome, you also have the option to complete the qualification TLILIC2014 – Licence to drive a light rigid vehicle. This qualification is part of the Transport and Logistics Training Package and is recognised across Australia. It certifies that you have achieved the nationally endorsed competency standards to safely operate a light rigid vehicle within commercial transport environments. Choosing this option not only meets VicRoads licensing requirements but also enhances your employability and industry recognition for roles requiring formal heavy vehicle driving qualifications

Eligibility: Applicants must hold an Australian car licence for the minimum requirement of 12 months (not including cancellations or suspensions) to be eligible or hold an approved VicRoads exemption to upgrade to Light Rigid Licence.

I had training for my HR license, and Alex was my trainer. He was very helpful and did an excellent job explaining the rules and providing clear guidance on road safety. His training made it much easier to understand what’s required to obtain the HR license. I would definitely recommend Alex to others as well.

What is the Light Rigid (LR) licence course?

This comprehensive 1-day course prepares you to safely operate light rigid vehicles and qualify for your official VicRoads Light Rigid (LR) heavy vehicle licence. You’ll learn advanced vehicle control, commercial driving safety standards, and professional driving expertise through theory and hands-on practical training.

With an LR licence, you can drive light rigid vehicles greater than 4.5 tonnes but not exceeding 8 tonnes GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass), or vehicles that seat more than 12 people including the driver. This includes delivery trucks, buses, and small commercial vehicles.

You’ll master advanced vehicle control and monitoring, commercial driving safety standards, traffic and road condition management, hazard management and defensive driving techniques, efficient driving techniques, engine power management, vehicle controls and instruments, pre-operational checks, load restraint, and professional driving expertise.

Both courses provide the same training and result in your VicRoads LR licence. The nationally recognised training option (TLILIC2014) also issues a Statement of Attainment, which is recognised across Australia and can contribute towards Certificate qualifications in transport and logistics. Choose the nationally recognised option if you want credentials that count towards further qualifications or demonstrate your skills nationally.

For those seeking a nationally recognised outcome, you also have the option to complete the qualification TLILIC2014 – Licence to drive a light rigid vehicle. This qualification is part of the Transport and Logistics Training Package and is recognised across Australia. The licence-only option provides your VicRoads licence without the additional Statement of Attainment.

Yes, the LR licence is often the first step in a progression to Medium Rigid (MR), Heavy Rigid (HR), and Heavy Combination (HC) licences as you advance your commercial driving career.

This qualification opens opportunities in delivery and transport, bus driving, commercial logistics, trades requiring light rigid vehicle operation, and many other commercial driving roles.

Your VicRoads Light Rigid licence remains valid as long as you maintain your Victorian Driver’s Licence and meet VicRoads medical and licensing requirements. You’ll need to renew it according to your standard driver’s licence renewal cycle.

  • 18 years or older
  • Hold a current valid Australian car driver’s licence for at least 12 months
  • Meet VicRoads eligibility requirements
  • Provide evidence of identity as required by VicRoads
  • Pass the VicRoads eyesight test
