Multi-Combination (MC)

VicRoads Licence only or Nationally Recognised Training Qualification

Develop the skills to safely drive multi-combination vehicles, including coupling and uncoupling trailers, and become eligible for your VicRoads Multi-Combination licence, with the option to complete the nationally recognised qualification TLILIC3018 – Licence to drive a multi-combination vehicle and receive a Statement of Attainment.

Transform your employment prospects with our Multi-Combination (MC) Licence program, designed for experienced drivers, typically Heavy Combination (HC) licence holders, ready to take the next step into operating Australia’s most complex freight configurations, including road trains, triples, and other multi-combination sets.

Across an intensive one-day blend of targeted theory and advanced practical driving, you’ll build elite capabilities: precise control of articulated multi-combination vehicles, expert monitoring of traffic and road conditions, confident coupling and uncoupling of trailers, professional performance management in demanding freight environments, and rigorous compliance with safety standards for long-haul and road-train operations. Training is job-focused so you finish work-ready, not just test-ready.

Training is delivered at our Tullamarine Training Centre and combines targeted pre-reading and a short workbook with practical, hands-on instruction. You’ll complete written and driving assessments through the official VicRoads examination process under the guidance of specialist instructors.

On successful assessment, you’ll receive a Certificate of Competency to upgrade to your VicRoads Multi-Combination licence. For participants seeking a nationally recognised outcome, you can also choose to complete the qualification TLILIC3018 – Licence to drive a multi-combination vehicle, and receive a Statement of Attainment recognised across Australia.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a valid Australian car drivers licence and a heavy rigid or heavy combination licence for a minimum of 12 months to be eligible.  Note: The 1 year period includes any combination of holding HR and HC licences, including 364 days HR and 1 day HC.

I had training for my HR license, and Alex was my trainer. He was very helpful and did an excellent job explaining the rules and providing clear guidance on road safety. His training made it much easier to understand what’s required to obtain the HR license. I would definitely recommend Alex to others as well.

Got questions? We have answers to help you get started.

What is the Multi-Combination (MC) licence course?

This comprehensive 1-day course prepares you to safely operate multi-combination vehicles including road trains, B-doubles, triple trailers, and Australia’s most complex freight operations, qualifying you for your official VicRoads Multi-Combination (MC) licence. You’ll learn highly sophisticated articulated vehicle control, advanced hazard management, and exceptional safety standards through theory and hands-on practical training.

With an MC licence, you can drive multi-combination vehicles including heavy combination B-double rated vehicles at least 22 metres in length with more than one trailer (with all pertinent documentation and permits), three-axle prime movers with A and B trailers each with bogie axles, road trains, B-triples, and other complex freight vehicles.

Yes, the Multi-Combination (MC) licence is the highest and most advanced heavy vehicle licence available in Australia, qualifying you to operate the most complex freight vehicles including road trains and multiple trailer combinations.

HC (Heavy Combination) covers prime movers with single semi-trailers over 9 tonnes GVM and B-doubles. MC (Multi-Combination) covers road trains, B-triples, and vehicles with multiple trailers (22+ metres), representing the most complex and demanding heavy vehicle operations in Australia.

You’ll master highly sophisticated articulated vehicle control, expert traffic and road condition monitoring, vehicle performance in extreme transport environments, advanced hazard management for multi-combinations, exceptional safety standards for road train operations, efficient driving techniques, engine power management, and coupling and uncoupling multiple trailers.

Licence-only: You receive your VicRoads Multi-Combination driver licence, which is state-issued and allows you to legally drive MC vehicles on the road.

Nationally recognised training (TLILIC3018): You receive both your VicRoads MC licence AND a Statement of Attainment for TLILIC3018. This is part of the Australian Qualifications Framework and is portable across Australia for employment and further study pathways.

Both options provide the same VicRoads licence – the nationally recognised option (additional $100) simply adds the nationally recognised qualification.

Victorian driver licences are recognised nationally for driving. If you relocate interstate, you’ll generally need to transfer your licence to the new state within their specified timeframe. If you obtained the nationally recognised training, your Statement of Attainment (TLILIC3018) remains nationally recognised for training and employment pathways.

This qualification enables you to work in long-haul interstate road train operations, remote area freight transport, B-triple operations, specialised multi-combination logistics, and elite positions in the Australian heavy transport industry.

Your VicRoads Multi-Combination licence remains valid as long as you maintain your Victorian Driver’s Licence and meet VicRoads medical and licensing requirements. You’ll need to renew it according to your standard driver’s licence renewal cycle.

  • 18 years or older
  • Hold a current valid Australian car driver’s licence for at least 24 months
  • Currently hold a Heavy Combination (HC) licence (and have held either an MR or HR licence for a minimum of 12 months before obtaining your HC)
  • Meet VicRoads eligibility and eyesight requirements
  • Complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment
  • Physical capacity to safely complete practical components

This course is ideal for elite heavy vehicle operators, road train specialists, multi-combination professionals, experienced HC licence holders advancing to the pinnacle of heavy vehicle licensing, and anyone meeting VicRoads eligibility requirements who wants their MC licence.

You must currently hold an HC licence and have previously held an MR or HR licence for at least 12 months, which means you’ll already have extensive commercial driving experience. Additional multi-combination vehicle experience is beneficial but not mandatory for this course.

No. This course suits job-seekers, up-skilling workers and experienced drivers seeking to expand their licence qualifications to the highest level.
You must have the physical capacity to undertake practical training and assessment, including safely entering and exiting heavy vehicles, sitting in a truck for the duration of training and assessment, operating vehicle controls, and physically coupling and uncoupling multiple trailers.

You must meet VicRoads medical standards for holding a heavy vehicle licence. If you have any medical conditions that may affect your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle, you may need to provide medical clearance. Contact VicRoads or speak with us before enrolling if you have concerns.

Only if you choose the nationally recognised training option. A USI is required to issue your Statement of Attainment (TLILIC3018) and allows you to access your accredited training records for life. It’s not required for the VicRoads licence-only option. Create or retrieve your USI at usi.gov.au.
